Batman 1943 - a young fans reaction

I have a friend who is heavily into superheroes, but has never seen the original Batman serial, or the follow-up, Batman and Robin. So I decided to correct this problem by giving him the first Batman...

Re: Batman 1943 - a young fans reaction

LG, that is clearly not what I said. But an honest question here: what would YOU do with the historical facts that I cited? Ignore them? I think that we live in a closed system, not a vacuum; and open...

Re: Batman 1943 - a young fans reaction

I wasn't speaking directly to you at all. I will let our fellow Monster Kids decide whether "being wary about a group of folks... is just common sense" is racist or inappropriate or whatever.

Re: Batman 1943 - a young fans reaction

You did quote me. (Though you left out the parts that didn't fit your thesis, as when I spoke against paranoia & phobia.) And you did imply that I'm a rascist. (Which I bet the Kenyan, Jewish,...

Re: Batman 1943 - a young fans reaction

Happy new year to you too. I stand by what I typed and see no need to clarify anything I said, so I'll just reiterate that BATMAN is a serial I enjoy - but it is certainly racist. Go tell some Asian...

Re: Batman 1943 - a young fans reaction

Again, you draw WAY too much from what I wrote. I was speaking in the context of Jack's point about heavies in fiction being drawn from real life. In the '30's/'40's, it made PERFECT sense to use...

Re: Batman 1943 - a young fans reaction

I don't think the issue with the serial is that it uses Japanese characters as bad guys, that's completely typical of the era. The problem part comes in the very first chapter (I think) when the...

Chris, no debate there: A Stupid Racist Comment is a Stupid Racist Comment - whether used to describe friend (patronizingly) or foe (maliciously).

Nice...it's one of my favorite serials, by far. Glad you enjoyed it, ometiklon!

Has anyone ever seen the next episode closer from Chapter 2? It's missing on the dvd version.

Re: Batman 1943 - a young fans reaction

Gotta say, I like the '49 serial much better. The '43 one is racist at such a high level, plus the "dynamic duo" gets their ass kicked in pretty much every episode.

Re: Batman 1943 - a young fans reaction

Except that the Batsuit (and hence the guy in it!) looks even goofier in the '49 - and Robin looks older than Bruce!

Re: Batman 1943 - a young fans reaction

I actually don't think the 1943 suit looks goofy really - it's pretty cool, and practical as well! 1949 one - oh yes, looks like a space bopper.

Despite their flaws, I've always found the 1943 costumes ( above ) to be more impressive than the 1949 costumes ( below ).  Here's a side by side comparison of both duos:  - GJS

The 1949 Robin looks like Michael Rooker!

Here's my slight tweak of the '43: With just a little more effort, we'd have really had something!

Re: Batman 1943 - a young fans reaction

The 1943 serial did alter the color of the bat cape-and-mask from night to day shooting.  Note that sometimes it's quite a bit lighter than the trunks and boots.Too bad they didn't get the idea to...

Re: Batman 1943 - a young fans reaction

1943 Batman reflects the times. It isn't more racist than other WWII era movies with Japanese bad guys. They bombed Pearl Harbor. They weren't going to get a ticket parade. You want political...

Re: Batman 1943 - a young fans reaction

I'd agree...except the opening chapter directs its anger towards the interred Japanese Americans, not Hirohito and his cronies. That may well also be a reflection of public mood but it's a pretty...
